A Beautiful Bejeweled Bald Head Island Wedding - Part I

photo by Chris Lang Photography

We were thrilled when Megan, a Bride-to-Be with lots of wonderful ideas,
and Susan, a spunky & very organized "MOB," contacted us for
Megan & Anthony's destination wedding!

Because of the location,
we realized there would be
some challenges doing the
Floral & Event Designs, Cakes, & Videography,
since Megan & Anthony were planning an entire Week of Celebrations
to be held on Bald Head Island
- and we were soooo up for it!!!

Bald Head Island, the perfect location for Megan & Anthony's
dream destination wedding, is a small, picturesque island accessible only by ferry from the nearby town of Southport, NC.  The focal point of this small island is "Old Baldy," an out-of-service lighthouse built in 1817.

Eight months before the wedding, Megan, Susan and we Divas
boarded the ferry for BHI and a full day of reconnaissance!!!

No cars allowed on the island.
Golf carts are the  mode of transportation!!!

The Village Chapel,
designed in keeping with nineteenth-century Carolina coastal architecture, is picture perfect for their wedding ceremony!!!

The perfect place for the rehearsal luncheon - The Shoals Club
- check!!!

The perfect location for the reception - The Bald Head Island Club - check!!!

The perfect Villas for friends & family (& Divas!)
to stay for the week - check!!!

Working along side this dynamic duo,
we knew this was going to be fun!!!

~~~~~~~
...the months flew by and we were back again for
THE WEDDING WEEK OF WOW!!!
All of the
flowers, event design details, and cakes
for the week of events,
had to be brought over on the ferry
and transported via golf cart!!!
When we unloaded at our Villa,
Megan and Susan had treated us to gift bags they had made for all their family and guests!!!
We got everything unpacked & organized
...and we were off & running!!!...
Rebekah went right to work filming beautiful "B-roll"
for the Wedding Week Video!!!
Filming here is a thrill
since this island is filled with such beauty
 - it is magical!!!
THE BRIDAL LUNCHEON
The Bridal Luncheon was held at the Bald Head Island Club.
And since Megan has such an eye for detail,
we wanted to wow her with a beautiful tablescape
to compliment the vintage tea cups she gave each of her "favorite ladies."
WELCOME DINNER!!!
Megan & Anthony started things off with a bang -
             a Welcome Dinner at Mojo's!!!...
...and since the Bride & Groom, and most of the wedding party,
are part of the "Gator Nation," ie, graduates of the University of Florida,
they asked us to do our
Chocolate Praline Ganache Cake
with a fondant cut out of  Albert, the Gators beloved mascot!!!
For these tablescapes, we wanted to compliment the beauty of the ocean
that surrounds the club on three sides!
The flowers we used were green fuji mums, white alstromeria,
and both pink & green dendrobium orchids,
arranged in glass vases with lily grass
and set among hurricane globes and decorative sea shells.
Megan asked us to do a Groom's Cake that reflected
Anthony's love of shark fishing!
We thought it was only fitting that we have his Bride
join him in his hobby!!!
And They Fell in Love - Just Like In The Movies!!!
                                                                                               photos by The Three Divas
Andrea & Kevin met in Wilmington
while working together on the movie "Bolden,"
and then they went on to work for the TV show, "In Plain Sight."
 After having worked together for 4 years on "In Plain Sight,"
on the last night of shooting,
...(imagine a movie trailer!)...
 ...the music swells!...
...the camera pans a movie studio office filled with people...
...standing center stage, a surprised Andrea...
 Kevin drops to one knee...
...and that's how they got engaged...on set...with 2 cameras set up and rolling...
and two boom mics...and friends watching, cheering, and crying...
it was cinematic perfection!
Fast forward to a picture perfect wedding,
And The Kentucky Derby Made a Diva Cry, Why?!!!...
It was our privilege to be asked to provide the cake for
the Wilmington Junior League's fundraiser,
the Mint Julep Jubilee Kentucky Derby Party!!!
Our cake design included two sugarpaste rose shaped Chapeaus
(that's French for "Hats" for us novices!!!)
that were inspired by the work of our friend
and well known milliner, Jan of aMuse Artisanal Finery!
Diva #3 (Jennifer) and Honorary Diva (Wendy)
beautifully represented all of us at this wonderful event!
And the Kentucky Derby made me cry why?!!!...
I (Diva #1 - Deborah!) know little about sports and absolutely nothing about horse racing!  In fact, after we Divas were asked to do the cake for the Junior League's annual fundraiser, The Mint Julep Jubilee, it took me a while to figure out that it was a party to watch "the most exciting two minutes in sports," The Kentucky Derby!
Diva #3 (Jennifer) represented us at the Mint Julep Jubilee, while Rebekah and I worked at home.  We decided to take a break and watch the Derby on TV.  So my response to the race caught me completely by surprise!
As I watched Orb, who was at the back of the pack, suddenly surge forward and power right through the middle of all those thundering horses to go on to such a significant win, I broke into tears - OK, I sobbed!
Now, as any good psychologist would counsel, there had to be something deeper going on here!
There was.
I am now a "woman of a certain age" (I won't tell you exactly what age, but I will say that I attended college with Farrah Fawcett!).  And my life has not turned out in any way I ever expected.  Five years ago my daughters and I supported each other as together we made a choice to start our lives all over again.
These last few years, in many ways, have been very painful, but they have also been the best years of my life and have resulted in me finally coming into my own!  I now have such a passion for life, with so much to live for, so much I want to do, BUT I feel so far behind.  I feel like I joined my race too late to ever have a chance to "win" - will I ever be able to catch up with all that my heart desires to do?
Then it occurred to me that my age has little to do with it, I have seen my two daughters and their friends struggle with the same fears - "Am I too late?"
But then I read more details about the race and discovered that Rosario, Orb's jockey, ALLOWED ORB TO DROP BACK BEFORE SURGING FORWARD.  Rosario knew his horse!  HIS BEING AT THE BACK OF THE PACK WAS PURPOSEFUL.  This is what it took for Orb to win...
...and I started to cry all over again.
